Part I - Last Christmas

Magnus remembered their first Christmas together like it was yesterday. He loved his Shadowhunter's blue eyes and soft black hair that contrasted with his whole being. Despite such a serious job he held as a Shadowhunter, around Magnus, he was as bright as possible. They had done so much together and for Christmas, Alec was determined to make sure that it all continued.

But it didn't.

Alec was sent away to London for a special mission and was told he wouldn't make it back for Chrismas, to which the eighteen year old was disappointed to hear. It was the first year without Max and he certainly didn't want to indulge himself into the work that killed the poor boy in the first place. He wanted to be in the arms of his lover, enjoying his name being called softly while they sat by the fire, hot cocoa in their grasp. That's all he wanted; a peaceful holiday without caring about whose life would be on the line if the mission went awry.

It didn't happen.

Of course, in defense to himself, Mangus would claim that he was lonely. He spent pretty much the whole Christmas season to himself while his lover fought in another country, not knowing when or if he would return. The fact that he doubted that his Shadowhunter would come back to him or not saddened him on the inside. Maybe even more than the quiet Christmas night did.

"He hasn't called." Mangus recalled pointing out, twirling a melting candy cane in his mug of cocoa.

Even by the comfort of his friend Ragnor Fell, he was unable to feel the holiday cheer that the mundane did. How can Maryse possibly live on knowing her children are in danger? Magnus felt he didn't, or would never be able to understand that answer. Yes, his beloved Alec was a Shadowhunter so it was only natural for him to put his life on the line daily. But around the time of Christmas? That was just plain cruel.

The first kiss had been initiated by Ragnor. The other warlock felt no remorse or regret when he was pushed away by a very shocked Mangus. This is what he claimed his old friend, the High Warlock of Brooklyn truly wanted. Alec would not be making it home in time. He said so himself that he would be unable to make it back for the night that everyone waited for each year—even more so than the beautiful Valentine's Day.

And so the second kiss was started by a confused Magnus to clear out the hazy thoughts of how alone he was. He always dreaded the day that he would lay beside his mortal lover, marveling at how pretty those blue eyes were and how soft his black locks were for a final time before the pale skin finally began to loose its color. For this is why Magnus even contemplated giving up his immortality before. However, Ragnor would be here forever just as he would.

His attention snapped to the fireplace, seeing Chairman Meow eliciting a small hiss at Ragnor, eyes narrowed into slits. But nothing was quite as vivid as the view of Alec standing there with a special present in hand, the smile on his lips slowly disappearing. His boyfriend, who he thought loved him—no more or no less than a regular old mundane—, was standing in the kitchen, pushing another against the counter for a kiss that was evident at how their lips were red and slightly parted.

Now Magnus knew what it felt like to be a deer caught in the head lights.

Damn the young boy for being able to move so fast. Magnus trailed behind the other into their bedroom, gasping at how Alec took whatever he could hold in his arms and tossed it into the suitcase he had brought with him. The suitcase he had brought since he was home—if could even call Magnus's loft home anymore.

"Alexander listen to me!" Magnus shouted who knows how loud, grabbing his boyfriend's arm to spin him around. If it was possible for Magnus to finally have a loss for words, it was now. Small streams of tears mixed with makeup just Alec's shade was falling down his cheeks, showing old and new scratches and scars. "W ... What the hell Alec?"

Magnus could've sworn that he heard the other's heart breaking, the present he spent his earnings in London to get, the present that could've affected his future—his future with Magnus, was dropped to the floor.

"I wanted to look pretty when I proposed, when I surprised you. I know how much you like pretty things, Magnus."

Part II - This Christmas

It was stupid, petty and even pathetic that Magnus refused to get rid of the diamond ring. There was signifigance behind it that he wanted to hold on to, even if it was only for a little while. Because Alec had left him on Christmas. He had packed up all his important items right away and left, returning when he knew the warlock would be away. For that reason, Magnus made sure that he kept the ring with him at all times. It was the last piece of Alec that he had.

Pandemonium never looked so dull before. Only people who were lonely on Christmas, of all the days of the year, would party in such a place. Magnus even took off his ring to appear friendlier, freer if possible.

"Do you want another drink?"

The voice was light and soothing to listen to but fake. Magnus realized this but he couldn't help himself than to be drawn to it. The piercing blue eyes and dark head of hair drew him to the male at the bar. This male was like Alec, but at the same time, so far away from the Shadowhunter's perfection.

"I believe that I'm done."

And so Magnus finally took his leave. He couldn't possibly bear being around someone so boring for that long. At the very least this mundane had some sense of fashion, a trait that Alexander Lightwood lacked.

His loft was barren, void of any Christmas themed decorations. It would merely remind him of what had almost happened and he didn't want to be reminded of such a night. Even though he asked Santa for a certain gift, he wasn't expecting it underneath the Christmas tree when he returned. A present as such would've been much too big to wrap anyway.

Only Chairman Meow was there to greet his warlock owner, swinging its tail around like it was happy. Magnus saw the smallest hint of a smile but didn't linger over it. It may have been because he had gotten the pet a new scratching post since Magnus was dreadfully tired of having his pants being torn up by the little tyrant. As a precaution, Magnus had to hang all of his good pants locked away with a spell so that the darn thing couldn't get to them. Then there was that one pair. A pair of sparkling, tight blue ones that his ex had been oh-so kind to find for him. Absolutely nothing could happen to that pair.

When he opened the door to his bedroom, it was dark but he saw a figure clearly sitting on his bed, hunched over something. A normal person, a mundane would've ran at his point but he was frozen to the spot.

"I've been looking for this ring for a year now." The shadow mused, shoulders moving up and down to signify the bit of laughter. "A part of me knew you had kept it. But another part of me always wondered why. Why would you want to keep something like this?"

Magnus choked at first, he couldn't help it. "I kept it because I loved it. I do love it. And I still love you, Alexander."

"I'm only back to give you something," Alec said, ignoring the other. "The key you gave me ... I kept it and finally decided it was time to give up on us. You never came to find me. You never ran after me that night like I thought you would. And you were at the club tonight with another guy. So I see you've moved on."

"Don't be silly, Alec—love. We were just talking. I wouldn't have kept the ring if I felt otherwise." Magnus argued, hoping it was all a dream gone wrong. Alec, his Alec, couldn't come back like this.

A soft kiss on the lips, just as their first as a couple, was all Magnus would have to remember later on. A pair of whispered words would all his mind would linger on. A single Shadowhunter would be the only thing Magnus Bane would never be able to get over.

"Aku cinta kamu." I love you. "Not that that changes anything. Merry Christmas, Magnus, and a Happy New Year."

Pretty much this idea seemed better at midnight than when it did when I finished writing it. Welp, that sucks.
