A A A A

Norway stared outside his window. It was late at night and all he could see was black, raindrops, and the occasional strike of lightning.

As he looked outside, he heard soft little footsteps outside his door. Slowly the door opened, and a sliver of light made its way inside of his room. It was replaced by the creaking of the door, which was followed by more footsteps. Not too long after, he felt a small dip in his bed.

Knowing that the poor girl was scared of thunderstorms, Norway said nothing as he gathered the small child into his arms. He rocked the child back and forth as he sang old hymns of Asgard, Odin, and Ragnarok. He knew the girl was falling asleep, so Norway sat up with his back against the headboard of the bed, and he laid her head onto his lap after placing a small pillow there. He tucked blankets around the child and absentmindedly ran his fingers through the her soft hair.

He looked back outside and the storm seemed to get worse. He could not help but remember those times in the Viking Age. Life seemed almost simpler and easier in those times. There was not much to worry about back then, and life, in a way, was much calmer.

He remembered everything. Raised by the faeries and trolls as a child, gaining his independence from Sweden after years of being under another's rule. The memories were almost surreal.

Norway sighed again and slightly shook his head. He looked outside once more. The rain had slowed down to just a small pit...pat...pittapat rhythm. It was no longer black out; rather a dull, grayed blue colour painted the skies.

He looked at the small girl in his arms, somewhat regretful at the fact she did not get to experience what he considered was the fullest of life. Though he wishes she could have made her own memories of the past, a small part of him is also thankful she does not know the horrors that came along with such adventures.

Once more, he looked out his window. It seemed to be a tiny bit lighter out. He smiled a rare smile, and closed his eyes. He drifted into a light sleep, his dreams filled with memories of a time long ago.

Bbbbbtea  on says about chapter 1:
Good job! I really liked the way you wrote it. As a reader you can definitely see Norway' s point of view. The story was very cute by the way
