Graveyard

A A A A

“Come on, hurry up G! We don’t have long to get in, visit Alex and get home.”

“Yeah, yeah. We have 2 hours, retard.”

Hi, I’m Georgina, but most people call me G. My friend Siobhan and I are at the cemetery to visit my sister ALexandra. She passed away exactly 10 years ago today, and we’re visiting her.

“Hey, do you remember where she was buried.”

I thought about this for a second. “Hm, I haven’t been here in years, I’m not sure…” I lead Siobhan towards the roundabout nearest the entrance, and smiled.

“Okay, I remember this. The first road leads to shops, and the second leads to Alex. So it’s this way.” I pointed down the second road and smiled.

The two of us were walking down the side of the road, the same way as usual. Me, on the concrete edge so I don’t walk on the road, yet not on the grass. And Siobhan, walking almost in the middle of the road.

“Hey, G, can we go to the shops after, and have a look?”

“Sure,” I replied “I’ve never been there though. The last time I came here a couple of years ago, my dad said ‘Look over there. That road leads to your sister. Don’t go down the first path. That leads to the shops.’”

“Haha.” Siobhan laughed quietly to herself.

“What?” I asked, curious.

“That sounds like something from ‘The Lion King’.”

I sighed

“You’re just that sort of person, aren’t you.”

“You know it!” She laughed as she held her hand up. I put my hand up to hers and we did our usual secret hand shake.

It didn’t take long to get to Alex, past the first and second roundabouts, then turn left to the ‘Garden of Angels’, sadly one of many children’s areas.

“Oi, Siobhan, if I remember correct, she’s second row, on the right side.” As we trudged forward towards her grave when I remembered something my dad had told me.

“Hey, when you see Alex's grave, have a look at the shape. There’s a story behind it.”

She tilted her head at me, “Please tell.”

“Well, when my parents were deciding on a shape, they didn’t want something too pretty, and walking through the cemetery they saw a flame shaped grave. They got the man who cuts graves to cut that shape, and then told him to cut a slab off the side. There it is, see?”

By now, we were only a few metres away.

“Wow, it looks so cool.”

I walked forwards and wiped the dirt off of the grave.

Planting some small daisies in the dirt, I couldn’t help but stare for what seemed like years. Every time I came, I could feel the life drain out of my body. It had become inevitable.

“Hey G, look around. It’s gotten so dark! Haha, imagine if this was a scary story. That would be so cool.”

I looked up at Siobhan. “That’s your sort of thing, isn’t it? Well, we’ve been here long enough. Wanna go check out the shops before heading home?”

“Sure.”

The walk back to the shops seemed longer. We ended up taking a short-cut through some of the side paths next to the graves. The sky was a dark purple-blue, and crows were sitting in the trees, cawing at us as though they were trying to tell us something.

“Hey Siobhan, I just had an idea.”

“Yeah. What?” She asked, obviously uninterested, but I continued.

“I think I’ll write a horror story about this when I get home. It’s so creepy, it’s perfect.”

“What sort of story?”

I thought about this. “Well, I was thinking a horror one-shot.”

Without realising, we had reached the shops. The building looked like an old café. Flowers for sale out the front were withered, and there were cobwebs hanging from the veranda.

“I wonder if it’s open.” Siobhan whispered. I walked towards the door of the café and saw a sign.

-Monday             -              9am – 6pm

-Tuesday            -               9am – 6pm

-Wednesday        -             12pm – 9pm

-Thursday           -               9am – 6pm

-Friday                 -               9am – 6pm

-Saturday            -                7am – 8pm

-Sunday               -                 CLOSED

“Today’s Thursday, so it should still be open.” I tilted my head, wondering where everybody was.

“Hey G, let’s go inside!”

I rolled my eyes. “How can you sound so excited? Isn’t this creepy to you at all?”

“Nope.” Siobhan grinned, and ran to the door. It creaked as she opened it, and she looked back at me, losing her grin slowly. I raised an eyebrow at her.

“Please, don’t let my opinion disturb your little adventure, Siobhan.” I grinned at her. She smirked back, and went inside.
