“Visiting again?” A boy around his thirties named Minhyuk asked as he leaned on the door while looking at his friend who was too busy neatly packing his clothes. “--- You visit her every year. I guess you really like that place.” Minhyuk continued while looking at the man with a smile plastered on his face.

“Yeah. This year I’ll be there for a couple of weeks.” The man replied as he finished putting all the clothes he needed on his visit with his so called ‘mother’ on the country side. He picked up the bag and then carried it towards the living room as Minhyuk just followed him.

“We’re gonna miss you here, Hoseok.” Minhyuk said as he walked closer to the latter and smiled. Hoseok just chuckled and looked at him. “It’s only gonna be a couple of weeks.” he said and then carefully placed his bag down on the floor and gave his friend a friendly hug. After a few moments, he lets go with a smile on his face. “Take care of my house while I’m gone.” He said and then picked up his bag once more and walked outside towards his car this time.

Every year on the fourth month, Hoseok would visit her mother on the country side and help her with some chores there. His father died in an early age and he’s the only son so he’s the only one his mother have. Unfortunately, his job is in the city so he had to move. But he and and his mother had an agreement that he’ll visit every year.

It’s not like he hates visiting there. In fact he loved it. That’s the place where he grew up and all his childhood memories were made there. Unlike the city, that place got fresh air and people won’t judge you for not wearing proper clothes by just stepping outside for a couple of minutes. There’s no bugs or rats you see running around the sidewalks, and there are a lot of flowers and trees planted everywhere. it’s a perfect place for a vacation.

The ride was quite long. He stopped on some fast food to have lunch and then left right after he took the last bite. After that, he went into a convenience store to buy some snack and some drinks for himself during the whole ride and also grabbed some cookies to give his mother when he arrives. It took him a total of eight hours to get to his mothers house and the moment he arrived, he was greeted by his mother with the sweetest smile on her face and a hug.

She helped him with his bags and placed it on his room. They had a casual afternoon, eating snacks, talking to each other. Hoseok talked to her about his job and about his friends. He once brought Minhyuk and the others here for vacation so his mother knows all of them.

When he was about to help his mother clean the house, or cook dinner, she insisted for him to let it go and have some rest since he had such a long ride. So like what she said, he sat on the stairs outside on their garden as he enjoyed the view. He ignored his phone when it rang since it’s probably just some of his friends asking if he already arrived.

He was enjoying the fresh air when he noticed there was a boy standing just outside their territory staring at him with a huge grin on his face. The boy was quite tall but too thin on Hoseok’s eyes. He waved his hand with a smiled and then walked towards the boy.

“Hello! Who might you be?” The boy asked with the huge grin on plastered on his face.

Hoseok just smiled back at him “Just your new neighbor for a couple of weeks.” he said and then the latter’s eyes widened and looked at the house.

“You’re visiting Mrs. Shin?” The boy asked, the smiled not leaving his face and Hoseok just nodded. He looked at the boy and and noticed that he’s quite taller than him but also thinner than him.

“I thought so. It’s my first time to see a car like this around here.” The boy said and then pointed at Hoseok’s car. It was a sports car so that’s probably why he don’t see cars like it much. They’re on the countryside after all.  He just chuckled and then looked at the boy as he offered his hand for a shake hand with a grin on his face “I’m Hyungwon by the way. Chae Hyungwon.”

Hoseok gladly shook the latter’s hand “Shin Hoseok.” he said as he smiles and then introduced himself as Mrs. Shin’s son. The latter was quite shocked because she didn’t know that Mrs. Shin had a son. The two of them talked to each other and Hyungwon was the one who caused the conversation to be so long.

Hyungwon had asked Hoseok about what he do and why did he visit. Is it fun living in the city or is all the people rich just like how he sees it on the television. The latter just laughed it off and then answers all his questions happily. Since Hyungwon have never been in a city, he got curious when he found out that the latter lived in a city so he asked him thousands of questions he always wanted to know.

“You seems nice. You’re like a protagonist of some drama. They’re all nice.” Hyungwon suddenly said while smiling. The latter just chuckled while looking at him “If I am a protagonist of some show. Then that show is the worst story ever made.” he said but the latter gasped and playfully hit him.

“Stop being so negative. I’m pretty sure your life is pretty exciting. Living in a city and all...” Hyungwon said as he laughs and Hoseok just laughed it off. The latter seems so innocent and loving. He thought all the show on dramas and movies are the same in real life. They both just talked and talked as time passes by and they didn’t realize that it was already night time. The sky already darkened and turned into pure dark blue with millions of stars in them.

They both bid goodnight to each other as they walked towards the directions of their own houses and promised to continue their conversation the next morning as both of them parted as friends.

Talking to each other seems so easy and it’s as if they’ve already known each other for years. They became so close and treats each other like best friends. Minutes turned into hours, hours turned into days, and days turned into weeks. It was already time for Hoseok to go back to the city and leave.

“Time flies by so fast.” Hyungwon said as he forced a smile at the latter. He knows that they’ve only known each other for weeks but he can’t help but feel a bit sad when Hoseok announced his departure. “It’s okay, it’s not like it’s the last time I’ll be here in the first place.” Hoseok said and the moment those words left his lips, Hyungwon’s eyes widened and then looked down at the floor.

“Stay here.” Hyungwon said as he rushed towards his house and left Hoseok there for a couple of minutes. Hoseok patiently waited and when he saw Hyungwon coming out of his house and then rushing towards him, he can’t help but smile.

Hyungwon handed something to Hoseok and then sat down next to him. The thing that Hyungwon gave to Hoseok is a stone than has a letter ‘X’ in it. Hoseok just stared at it carefully and waited for the latter to explain why did he give it such a thing.

“Listen, I want to tell you something. You’ve been really nice to me and became a friend in such a short time. But I still haven’t told you some important thing about myself.” Hyungwon said as he looked down and held Hoseok’s hand that’s currently holding the stone he gave.

“I have a very rare disease. When I was around eighteen, a friend of mine tried to take me into a city but we got into an awful car crash. I hit my head hard and it triggered something on my brain that caused the rare disease.” Hyungwon explained as he looks on the ground. Trying his best to remember everything.

“That disease is just like Alzheimer but different. It’s a very rare disease that the doctors can’t find any way to fix it.” He continued and looked at the boy if he was still listening and when their eyes met, he tried to smile.

“I forget things. After a few weeks or a month I forget all the things that happened. My memory span is short. That’s why I gave you that rock with a little ‘X’ on it. I wanted to be your friend so when you come back, show me this rock so I’ll know you’re someone I know. The ‘X’ means you’re not a stranger but a friend.” Hyungwon explained as he gently pulled the rock from Hoseok’s hands and pointed a finger a the ‘X’ he carved himself.

“That’s what the paper next to my bed said.” Hyungwon said and then smiled. Hoseok, however just looked at him curiously as the latter continued explaining everything to him. “I think I wrote the writings on that paper years ago. When I wake up, it’s always next to my bed reminding me about everything.” Hyungwon explained as the smile on his face grew wider.

Hoseok just nodded with a smile on his face, amused at what the latter had said. “Can I ask you something?” He said and then the latter replied with a ‘Ask away!’ while having a huge grin on his face.

“Do you remember your friend that was with you in the car crash?” Hoseok asked but then the latter just heavily sighed.

“Unfortunately, I don’t remember a thing about him. But all the people around here said that we were really close. They even make jokes like we cannot be pulled away from each other.” Hyungwon said as he chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck. “I do wish I can still remember him though.” he continued with a mumble.

Hoseok just caressed the latter’s back as he promised the latter that he’ll come back and be his friend again. Hyungwon just smiled and made Hoseok promise again and again that whole day. And the next day, both of them bid farewell at each other as best friends.

“Visiting again?” Minhyuk said as he watched Hoseok staring at the rock on his hand. He noticed how the latter’s grip tightened as he stood up and then silently walked towards a pile of rocks on the corner of the room and silently and carefully puts it there together with the others. An exact year have passed and it was the time of the year for him to visit his mother once again. He stared at the pile of rocks, all of it have little ‘X’ on it. A pile of rocks that reminds him how many years he have been suffering all by himself.

You’re just torturing yourself.” Minhyuk said and when the latter didn’t respond, he just silently walked out of the room and Hoseok followed him while carrying the clothes he packed.

When he drove off, he saw Minhyuk smiling at him but he cannot even fool a real fool. The smile was forced as he waved a hand on him. Hoseok just smiled back and focused on the road. His routine on the whole ride didn’t break. He stopped by in some fast food to eat, went into a convenience store to buy some snack and drinks.

But when he arrived, there was something different this time. He was startled when he heard a voice the moment he stepped out of his car. “Hello! Who might you be?” the boy said as he looked at him with a smile.

Perhaps Minhyuk was right. Perhaps he really is just torturing himself by going here every year to meet him but a part of him just always wanted to do it one more time. He regretted crashing that car when they were eighteen years old when he was going to bring the latter to the city and run away with him. That day was still on his mind as clear as crystal. As if it just happened yesterday. He always regretted it but he can’t bring himself to tell the boy it was him all along. He blames himself for everything. Why did he even try to run away with Hyungwon in the first place? If he didn't try the stupid idea, for sure everything were probably perfect.

A part of him always wanted to come back because he wanted to say sorry for everything he have done but he just can’t bring himself to do so. It hurts seeing his boyfriend looking at him as if he’s nothing but a stranger. A mere stranger. They were the best lovers when they were teenager and everything just got destroyed together with that car crash.

Just one more year, perhaps next year he’ll probably remember. Just one more time, he wanted the latter to look at him as a lover and not a stranger. He knows it’s impossible but, a part of him just wanted to be remembered.

Just one more year, maybe next year he’ll remember.

Just your new neighbor for a couple of weeks.”
