Makoto wasn't sure what he was thinking, joining the esteemed Kirigiri Detective Agency. Sure, he had detecting skills, but this was a big deal company that was known for having only the best, most skilled people, and Makoto was not one of those people.
The interview was more like an interrogation, and once that was over and he was officially a detective, he felt the weight of responsibility on his shoulders.
At least Jin Kirigiri seemed pretty nice. A lot of company owners were not.

Makoto was paired up with the daughter of the boss for an important mission. His first impression of her wasn't a great one; the lavender-haired detective glared at him, obviously not all too pleased to get paired up with a newbie.
It was a fairly long drive until they got to the town in which certain criminal activity had been reported—the kind of criminal activity that's better solved by detectives than the police. The brunette was seated in the passenger seat next to the more experienced detective (who he certainly didn't expect to know how to drive, but, well, he was proved wrong). It all felt very awkward to him, so he made his best attempt to strike up a conversation. Realizing they hadn't really been introduced, he used that.

"So, uh. I never caught your name?"

"Kyoko," she replied, voice monotone, devoid of emotion.

"Oh, um, that's a... nice name. My name's Makoto," the brunette said, feeling even more awkward now than before. The female detective made no response.

After a while, he found himself humming. He didn't really give it any conscious thought, it was just a thing he sometimes did when he was nervous. It was a light and cheerful tune.
Kyoko's expression changed, but only for a moment. She went back to her usual stoic and emotionless face so quickly, anyone who saw would've thought they imagined it change at all.

"I recognize that tune," she said simply, glancing over at the rookie detective before turning her attention back to the road. "It's a song my father used to sing to me, when I was a small child."

"O-oh! Really?" Makoto responded, looking at her with surprise. The girl only nodded slightly. There was no further reply.

Makoto changed his mind. He could see himself getting along with Kyoko.
