Magic

A A A A

Victor stared blankly at the lined sheet of paper in front of him, twirling his pen between his fingers.

It had been months since he last wrote his most successful song ever, topping all the charts he could and winning so, so many prices for his talent in songwriting and singing. During that time his world had been filled of glittering sparkles shimmering around him, giving him all the words and courage he needed. Then he had somehow managed to show that magical world to the people around him with his song and voice, making their world a little brighter. A little more magical.

Then it had disappeared. Gone. Just like he had never been special or talented at all.

His manager still believed in him though, and he was continuously prompting him to try. Try, try and try. He had done anything and everything he could, sending Victor on vacations, taking him to beautiful places, giving him inspiring books. However, nothing helped.

Victor sprawled out over his desk, throwing his pen away angrily. He was going nowhere, fast.

He had done everything in his might himself to get the feeling he’d had then back, but nothing ever worked and he felt ready to cry at the very thought of it. The magic in his world was lost and he wondered if it would ever return.

There was the sound of keys scrambling in the lock on his front door and soon it was opened.

“Hello?”

Victor groaned, both to let the person know where he was and because of the very person entering.

A blond-haired, young woman poked her head inside his room, narrowing her eyes at all the wrinkled up papers tossed around the room in frustration.

Alice was the woman’s name and Victor found her slightly scary. She was his manager’s assistant and had taken up the habit of visiting Victor every day to monitor his progress, which was not anywhere near the finishing line, and every time she would get a more disappointed look at finding him right where he had begun.

That was what scared Victor. Alice's disappointed look. Because if she looked like that, he wouldn’t even want to begin to think about how his fans’ faces would look.

“Still stuck?” She asked.

Victor grunted in response, continuing to lie atop his desk.

“Oh…”

There was that disappointed look again, worse than last time but not as bad as it would be the next day. Victor bit his lip and lifted his head slightly, trying to change the subject.

“There’s coffee on the stove, just re-heat it if you’re going to stay.”

Alice nodded, looking at the floor as she retreated to the kitchen and Victor sighed.

He knew Alice was one of his fans as well and that she wanted so badly to see Victor’s next work, expecting it to be as wonderful as his first.

But Victor had already lost all his confidence. He couldn’t deliver what was expected of him because he had lost that world. He had misplaced the wonders he could see and he couldn’t find them again.

There was the distant sound of Alice getting her coffee in the kitchen and then silence fell. Victor supposed she had made herself comfortable on the couch in the living room as she always did, reading or watching TV.

He shook his head, straightening his back, and took up his staring contest with the paper again.

Victor sat like that for hours, nothing but how much of a failure he was running through his mind as the clock ticked towards midnight. When it struck twelve he stood up and stretched with a yawn. He hadn’t gotten any further this day either, not that he had expected to anyway. The sparkles in his world were gone.

As Victor exited his room to go to the kitchen for a glass of water he heard a sniffle and nearly got a heart attack. He had completely forgotten Alice's existence in his apartment.

He made his way cautiously to the entrance of the living room and found the blonde sitting on the couch, legs pulled up to her chest and tears streaming down her cheeks from behind closed eyelids.

Victor cleared his throat awkwardly. “Are you okay?”

Alice didn’t answer or open her eyes and that’s when he realized that the other had earphones in her ears. Victor approached her slowly, not taking his eyes away from the woman on the couch.

There was something intriguing about her crying face, something that made Victor's heart and stomach stir with emotion and he had to stop himself from reaching out to capture those crystal-like water drops on his fingers.

It was magical.

Victor sat down beside Alice, regretting it immediately. She started, looking up at him with wide eyes, drying her tears and straightening out her legs. The magic was gone.

“S-sorry.” Alice mumbled, pulling out the earphones.

Victor shook his head, trying not to look disappointed.

“Why were you crying?” He murmured.

Alice bit her lip and looked down at the floor.

“It’s nothing, I just…” She took a shaky breath. “I-I was listening to your song a-and I just…”

She sniffled again and the tears came back, glistening, running down her cheek.

There it was again. That magic. That sparkle.

Victor grabbed Alice's chin to turn her head towards him, staring intently at her beautiful crying face. She blushed and tried to free herself but Victor gripped on harder, putting his other hand on Alice's shoulder.

And then it was back. Victor's wonderful, magical world was back, filled with so many sparkles that he was blinded. And it was amazing.

“Alice.” Victor breathed and she looked up into his eyes.

Victor's heart almost exploded with joy when he found the source of the wondrous magic again in the others chocolate brown orbs. Without even reflecting over it he leaned forward, pressing their lips together softly.

Alice made a confused sound but didn’t push him away. Instead she pulled Victor closer, giving him her lips and her beautiful world as the quiet living room slowly filled with colors and sparkles and magic.

Victor was star struck. He could see the whole universe and its glittering secrets behind his closed eyelids. The colors of all the words ever uttered and the sounds of all the emotions ever felt. He was where no one else had ever been. No one else except himself a few months ago.

Victor stood up at the speed of light as they broke apart to even out their breaths. Alice blinked at him confusedly, her eyes dazed and her lips red. Victor would have liked nothing more than to indulge himself in that rose-colored pout again, but he had finally found what he lost.

“I need to write!” He almost choked on the words with all the feelings welling up inside of him and rushed to his room, pen in hand before he even sat down at his desk.

Alice joined him after some time, sitting on the bed and watching him silently as he scribbled away, erasing something, writing it back, changing the words’ arrangements.

When he finally finished, having emptied his mind of every word he knew, it was eight in the morning and his eyes felt like sandpaper from lack of sleep.

“I’m done.” He croaked and stood up only to flop down on his bed, exhausted with the effort and excitement.

Alice got up, still as silent as she had been the entire time Victor had been working, making her way to the desk and looking through the work done.

“We could make an entire album with this.” She murmured after a while.

Victor made a humming sound, almost asleep. He faintly heard the rustle of papers as they were put down again, distantly felt a hand stroke his hair and almost didn’t catch Alice's parting words.

“Thank you.”

It took Victor a few seconds to realize that the front door opened and closed, the keys locking it again. But when he did he shot up, sleep long since forgotten, and raced to the door, fumbling to open it as fast as he could.

He hadn’t managed to accomplish the most important task yet. He needed to catch Alice. Make her his own.

He raced down all the floors, praying she hadn’t already left the building. To his relief he found her just exiting the elevator in the lobby and he skidded to a stop in front of her. Alice looked at him with big surprised eyes and Victor smiled back at her widely.

“I love you.”

She blinked and stared at him like she was dreaming. Victor chuckled and leaned forward, pressing his lips against Alice's wonderful ones again, feeling the other give in as she put her arms around Victor's neck.

The magic was back. Alice was his.
