A A A A

Alice was writing some stories as she did mostly, since John wasn’t there anymore to teach them things they would have learned at school. She also really loved reading and John had helped her getting a pass for the library. Her mother was furious until she told her mom that it was free until she was eighteen. She was set at ease back then and turned to her cooking pots again. Alice hadn’t told her mom that John gave her money, neither did Jenice knew. It was her secret. She wrote personal letters to John, together with the letters she wrote with her sister.  She did this because she had been in love with John for quite some time. John loved her back, but he wanted to keep her sister safe and didn’t want to hurt her feelings, knowing that also Jenice had fallen in love with him. So they never became a couple in public. He told Alice that he had a tattoo on the inside of his upper right arm with her name on and a message of love. He had putted it there so no one could read it when he was wearing t-shirts with short or long sleeves, which he from then on wore. “No sleeveless shirts for me anymore.”, he had told her. It made her blush that he eternalized her name and their relation on his skin. She always pleaded him to never participate in the sexual actions his group holds. But he always told her that he never participated, which made her happy. She still doubted that though. She didn’t know if she had to believe that he wouldn’t as everyone knew how gangs were. It made her happy though that he always thought about her and tried to take care of her in all ways he could. The money she got from him she used for buying post stamps and the remaining amount she saved. Or when they had really bad money problems she’d put a little bit of the money under her father’s keys so her mom would think that her father hadn’t drank all the money. She had to be sneaky and was grateful to John that he protected them. If she would have been recruited she certainly would have been used to steal or stand in for the transport of drugs. Or worse even, she might be used as a hooker. All things she didn’t want to do. Never would she.

Jenice was mostly outside. She tried to find good things that people had thrown out. Someone's trash was another's treasure. So she was mostly outside of the district. Of course a lot of guys bothered her, because she was a very pretty girl. But she never answered to them. She had got an emblem in the form of a broach which she got from John, representing his gang. These emblems were given to ‘protected propriety’, this was her label in the hierarchy. Because of this emblem they never touched her, just ‘invited’. She always had a big bag resting on her shoulder in which she would put the found materials and brought those back home. In her own room she sorted them by sale, keep, adaption and change. Everything she’d put in keep she used in the house and put them on places where her mom could find them with a piece of paper on it on which she would write: “I found this, now it’s a present to you. Your Jenice.”
Her mom praised her a lot at the dinner table and asked Alice why she couldn’t be like her. But Alice didn’t care too much for those accusations, she had John and she wasn’t that tomboyish as Jenice at all. She was a real lady, like in Jane Austen’s novels or something. So she was always polite and answered: “I see, I’ll try my best, mother.”
Then her mom would shake her head and gave up, because she knew that her children had different personalities and would just do what they saw fit.

After such days Jenice gave her sister a pimped dress and then told her sister she had based them on clothing styles she saw on the internet, which she used at the library. That’s how Alice got different styles of clothing. Jenice kept her own clothing simple, with not much frills. She also pimped clothes for her mother, but kept them practical. Alice got very frilly dresses or some pants with a pattern. Jenice gave her the most because she had most fun on pimping or making her clothing. She kept clothing she found for herself more to a minimum. She was always happy to find some sewing material somewhere. Once her mom had given her sewing material she didn’t used anyway and had put them in her room. Sometimes John sent some thread or some needles in the letters. Then the next time he would send in a pen or some ink for Alice. Alice didn’t found it necessary for John to do this as he sometimes sent her gifts in their own correspondence, but she knew why he did it. Jenice might get suspicious or fall in love with him because giving presents might give of the wrong vibe. John was smart and thought of everything. He didn’t want them to fight. Alice was grateful to him in another way than Jenice. But both really relied on him and he knew this. In some aspects gang life made it easier to protect them, though on other aspects he would been seen as weak or soft hearted and then he had to be more careful of his own team and protect his own back. That’s why the letters were send to his home. He also stayed over at his friends’ place as much as he could. His mom would pick up the letters and put them in a desk in his room, which she kept open for him. The desk had drawers which could get locked, only John and his mother had the key to these drawers. In here the letters were stashed, the newest letters at the top. The letters, which were read, were stashed in the drawer at the bottom. From time to time he would come home, kiss his mother and give her some money or anything else that would be useful to her. He would take a look at his new baby brother, after all this,  born to his mother’s third husband and go upstairs to read the new letters. The same day he would write his replies and push them through the lid in the girls’ mailbox. He knows they would read them immediately. And he would  laugh with the thought every time again. The letter for Alice from their secret correspondence wouldn’t be stuffed in the mailbox. He climbed a ladder each time to Alice’s room, knocking on the window, they would whisper something to each other and sometimes  exchanged a kiss. Then John would promise that when she’s eighteen, he would marry her. She would be flustered and would be blushing. He then would leave before they’ll get caught. These moments were the hardest on them both.

Jenice had also found a camera one day and she took it with her most of the time when she would go trash hunting again and from time to time she used her sister as model. She thought her sister was the perfect image of a young woman. Her sister had bigger breasts than her too. Sometimes Alice asked if she could take a photograph of Jenice, mostly Jenice refused to give her camera or stand on a photo, until one day Alice said that she wanted to send John photos of them. So he would see what fine ladies they have become on age seventeen. After they had chosen the photographs on which they were separate, they decided to make photographs from themselves together. After this they chose which one they liked most and deleted all the bad ones. Alice would take the camera and some of her pocket money and left to go to the library or a photo company to get the photos printed. Then she would come back home and show Jenice only the ones they had chosen and kept the others. These were put in a box and stashed under her bed. She kept them for her sister. She also saved money for her, because she wanted Jenice to become a professional photographer. For this Jenice needed to study. Alice sometimes worked at night, working in the sense that she chose the best photos her sis had taken the past days, she glued these in a book. The finished books were stashed in another box and the photos that probably weren’t approved, or so she thought, were put in another box. Sometimes she had too many photos that she liked and these photos she put aside for as her sister needed to make another kind of portfolio than the one she was making. She wanted to take care of her sister and Jenice took care of her too.

Both had their own interests and both had their own methods. Alice almost never went to the movies, when Jenice went a lot when her friends if they told her they would pay. Alice always went to the library and hired the maximum amount of books, when Jenice went to the library she sat behind the computer until the limit was reached. Alice loved writing, but Jenice didn’t, so the most letters were written by Alice. Alice didn’t liked counting, so Jenice did this whenever she had too. Alice wanted to be as honest as possible, but Jenice didn’t so she lied a lot about her age, when she was 13, and got a job at the supermarket. After such incidents, their mom would tell Alice to be more like Jenice. But as much as Alice wanted, she couldn’t. Then her mom would shout and tell her she had her head to much in the books and was formed by fantasy, while Jenice was formed by reality and knew what to do. Jenice defended her sister mostly and told her mom that Alice was right in some aspects and that she didn’t have to encourage bad qualities. Their mother would shut up and would rage some time while doing the laundry or washing the dishes, they would go upstairs and would go to one of their rooms.  There they would talk about anything random. And when the subject would come to boys, they would fall silent and begin about boys whose appearance or character they liked, both tried to avoid including John, they both managed each time in leaving him out. When they had gone through the list they never wanted to ask each other about John. It’s like he was a saint and they didn’t want to come on forbidden ground. They would then change the topic to something lighter and at the end they would tell each other about their day. When one of them wanted to leave to her own room, they would say something about the incident at the table, nod at each other and let the other be. Jenice would then fiddle with needle and thread, feeling sorry for her sister. Alice would start writing something or read a book, being happy with the defence she had gotten. After finishing what they wanted to finish, they would go to bed and think about what happened in the day. Then they would doze off and fall asleep in the middle of something they were thinking about.

In the mornings Alice was mostly up first and used the bathroom for a long time. Then Alice would go to her room to use make-up from time to time. Jenice would come out of bed as the last one and would drag herself to the bathroom, to use the bathroom for a much shorter period than her sister. Jenice would be last at the breakfast table and everyone would have started without her. She doesn’t care about that and takes what she wants to eat and will leave the breakfast table as last one. Alice would already have cleaned up the table, so she only would have to set her own dish away. Everyone wouldn’t see each other until lunch time. But the first time they’ll see their father in a day, would be at dinner time or they wouldn’t see him until the next morning. Or not at all for a few days. The two sisters hated their father. When he was drunk he would beat their mother and smash random things. He broke things too often, at random. They mostly heard their mother cry at night, when they couldn’t sleep. And they would give everything to protect their mother, but how could they establish this? Their father was mostly a violent drunk and most of the pubs kicked him out. But he sometimes would rage on the owners of the pubs with some friends and he would be let in again after some serious havoc. He thought it was a normal thing, while everybody knew it wasn’t. Sometimes their father wouldn’t come home, this meant that he had passed out on the streets and was sleeping somewhere on a cold floor. Sometimes it meant that he was put in jail. And this was what the sisters wanted. That their father would have been put in jail once again for some time, preferably for attacking the pub owners. Not that they wanted that the pub owners suffered, but they wanted their father away.
