A A A A

“Say you love me.”

Tears spilling from my eyes,

she replies in a trembling voice, “I love you.”

“Say it again!” he commands.

“I love you. I love you. I love you!” she sobs.

I couldn’t stand to watch it anymore I look away.

Her cries echo, calling for help.

But I can’t help her.

I don’t know how.

“I’m hungry,” he growls from behind me. The cold early morning sky stark compared to his wavering form, darker than night and paler than white. “You just ate,” I reply. “It’s not enough.” He glowers at me dangerously. I sigh, standing up. Looking down from the rooftop of a skyscraper I state, “It’s going to be harder to get you some juicy vampires this early in the day.”

“My name is a secret, but I should let you know that I’m a hunter.” The nice old lady raises a brow at me, “A hunter young lady?” I smile helping her up the stairs to her apartment. “You are a strange girl,” she says. “Do you hunt deer? I don’t really hear about hunters in the city.” We reach her apartment door.

We stop at the door. “Thank you for helping me,” the old lady says, “This is an old apartment and the elevator breaks down quite often.”

“Aren’t you wary of strangers?” I ask. The old lady stiffens, but she tries to hide it. Smiling she says, “I’m not scared. I know you’re a good girl. You wouldn’t hurt an old lady would you?”  I shake my head, “Of course not.”

She nods, “Yes. Of course not.” Her hands begin to tremble as she reaches for her handbag. She pulls out the keys to her apartment. “You should get going now,” she says. I take a step back. She glances at me and unlocks her door and quickly slams it shut.

An earsplitting scream penetrates the door. “Tomas!” screeches the old lady. The door flies open. Wild eyed the old lady grabs my arms, “Help! Call an ambulance! My grandson! There’s—there’s blood everywhere!”

“I’m a hunter,” I reply. The old lady stops her frantic yelling. “What?”

“I’m a hunter,” I repeat. “A vampire hunter.” Gasping loudly almost like she is choking she lets go of me. “No. No. No!”  “Tomas!” she screams and runs back inside her apartment.

He appears behind me. I can smell the blood on him. “Done?”

            “Yes,” he replies.
