Figurative Language: The Basics - you writing tips help general writingtips - chapter image

A A A A

Figurative language appeals to the senses. Some categories include:

1) Personification - gives human characteristics to anything not human.

Examples:

» Opportunity knocked on Light's door.

» Sirius' life passed by before his eyes.

» The flowers in Gakuen Alice waltzed in the gentle breeze.

- - -

2) Hyperbole - is simply an exaggeration of words. I would suggest this for fluff stories.

Examples:

» Elric was so tired he could sleep for an entire year.

» Misaki will go insane if Usui doesn't show up in time

» Katniss swore that she'd mercilessly murder Peeta if he didn't find himself.

3) Allusion - makes reference to a person, place, or anything in history. With this, writers can get their point across without a lengthy discussion, and their message is easier to remember.

Examples:

» Tamaki is truly a Romeo with the ladies (analysis: he was extremely romantic).

» After losing her job, Ichigo acted like Scrooge and refused to buy anything unnecessary (analysis: she was very stingy).

» Voldemort's murders reminded everyone of the Holocaust (analysis: he cruelly killed a certain ethnicity along with unfortunate others).

Figurative language is important becuase it portrays emotions more accurately than using literal words.

Also, as you can tell, there are numerous other types of figurative language such as similes, metaphors, alliterations, etc.

However, these three are my favorites!

thank you very much for the angst writing tips. I have an idea for angst and till now I've written only fluff and basically nothing serious (in AFF) so now I want to try angst but had no idea what should I include or point out more in the plot and characters. It's a good thing that this tips exist here *bows* ♥

Can you make chapter about how to make sentences more exciting?

I would really like it if you could write about how to make 'he said, she said' more exciting. Because its hard for me to write some thing better than he said when im stuck.
e.g. 'I don't care about you anymore. It was you who just... well.. you know...' she said.

please put up a chapter for that. I need your help.

Not trying to offend you, but I think saying "5Ws and 1H" may make more sense than "6Ws". I'm just putting that out there. Though, I do understand where you can get that from.

How about writing a genre that most FFO users (I think we usually write about bullying or romance) don't normally write like action, mystery, etc.
