Prologue

--------------------------------------------

She was running through the catacomb tunnels, frantically searching for her parents. Hearing their faint voices, she ran towards the resounding sounds. Turning a corner, she found them at the end of the corridor, walking slowly in her direction. Her father, tall and regal as ever, was dressed in simple attire, as was her mother. Her father had dark, midnight hair and the same mischievous emerald eyes that he had passed to his daughter.

Next to him silently walking was her mother. A simple, divine being in a tight ebony gown that fell to the floor in waves. From her mother, she inherited both her delicate beauty and unwavering stubbornness. Both looked as every bit as powerful, as graceful as is what their royal station required of them. The small girl smiled at her picturesque parents, however, just as she was about to catch their attention, sudden movement caught her gaze.

A glint of steel flashed towards her father and she screamed in frightened shock.

"Daddy, behind you!"

Her father was quick to dodge, but the blade was sharp and quick and caught her father on the arm, leaving behind a long blood-stained gash on the dark cloth. Her father hissed in furious pain as her mother sprang into action, revealing her hidden daggers and slew the attacker quickly with a few well placed stabs and a deft, unmerciful slash to the throat. The attacker, garbed in virginal white, fell to the floor, bloody and lifeless, as he was no match for the well ingrained trainings of this realm.

The small child rushed to her parents and as she reached them, she embraced her father with so much force, he stumbled back a few steps. She looked up at him with fearful eyes.

"Are you alright, Daddy?"

Her father's smile was tight and pained, but his daughter didn't catch it. She didn't catch his wince either when her mother started tending to the wound.

"Of course darling, it is nothing that your mother couldn't fix. She is the best healer we have, after all." He winked at his daughter and she giggled in response. Her mother smacked her father upside the head. "Flattery gets you nowhere with I, Mikael, you know as such." The little girl smiled, happy that nothing was wrong with her parents, as they were bickering. If they could banter back and forth, they were fine.

Her mother carried her out of the ancient catacombs with her head resting on her mother's shoulder. She gazed uncertainly at her father, who noticed and smiled softly at her. Kissing her forehead, her reassured her. "We're fine dearest, nothing is wrong."

But everything was wrong. The little girl didn't notice her mother get paler and paler, and didn't notice that instead of crimson staining her father's temporary bandage, it was green. A sickly green that forebode a poisonous death. A sickly green on the knife that had sliced through her father's arm, sinking its sharp blade into his flesh, releasing a deadly toxin into his bloodstream.

She believed her father that night though. That they were well, and that everything was fine.

Her parents died seconds before midnight.
