Description

Damon thinks he's on the verge of getting Elena to truly forgive him, and even more suspicious than that prospect, the blood crazed Stefan has agreed to temporarily work with him. Plodding down the not-so straight and narrow, the elder of the brothers finds himself in danger's arms yet again. Only this time, he discovers an utterly willing accomplice in stirring up the status quo that is less likely to stab him - literally - in the back than the majority of the other's he's collaborated with. When the Mystic Falls occupants are on the verge of returning the flow of the situation back to themselves, trouble saunters into town.  Not content with flipping the odds just once, a second inconvenience intervenes with an abstruse agenda of her own.

In a race against time to out-maneuver enemies, tribulation ensues when supposedly unbreakable bonds strain and lies are uncovered, but not at their full value. Alliances which were once sworn with blood bind some to an uneasy feeling of self doubt and an urge for revenge. The art of subtly testing ones adversary and a finesse in manipulation leads to a tedious struggle for the upper hand in a game of wits and precise deceit.

Show me how to lie
You’re getting better all the time.
And turning all against the one
Is an art that’s hard to teach.
Another clever word
Sets off an unsuspecting herd,
And as you step back into line
A mob jumps to their feet.

Slowly out of line
And drifting closer in your sights.
So play it out, I’m wide awake;
It’s a scene about me.
There’s something in your way
And now someone is gonna pay,
And if you can’t get what you want
Well it’s all because of me.

And now you’ll lead the way.
Show the light of day.
Nice work you did
You’re gonna go far, kid.
Trust, deceived!

With a thousand lies,
And a good disguise...

Clever alibis.
Lord of the flies.

Foreword

Scarce light filtered through the musky space. It was dust laden and damp and bitterly cold, even for them.

The blonde peered at the friend which was on the other side of the thick wooden door bolted and panelled with iron. "What do you want me to say? That I'm sorry?" She bobbed her head, running through the usual clichés. "Please forgive me? I didn't mean for it to turn out this way?" She flapped her free hand as the other brought a smoke up to full lips.

Swallowing back the lecture she wanted to vent, the slightly taller woman took a deep breath before deciding to reply. "I want you to wait around, withering, hoping for repentance for what you did, no matter what happens from here on."

"Shall I tell you a secret?" Looking up and tilting her head with a nonchalant pout, the older female teased. "It's something I've never said out loud before."

Growing impatient, the taller of the pair huffed in agitation. "It's not going to make me feel any different."

Taking a heavy drag on her vice, the blonde tutted mockingly. "On the contrary, I'm sure it'll bring a new light into your current stalemate." Subtly, chartreuse eyes flittered in anticipation, waiting for a reaction.

Giving up, the younger of the pair grumbled. "Then tell me if you're going to."

Holding off the information - for dramatic effect, of course - the blonde watched her company, inspecting her friend shift ever so slightly as she gritted her teeth like she always did when they argued. Puffing on her cigarette, the blonde blew smoke rings into the tension filled air as she looked up, feigning the seriousness she was drying to throw away. "I did it."

And just like that, the redhead's expression dropped as her pulse sped. The urge to run to the reinforced barrier almost choked her as the realisation sunk in.
