The next morning Catherine strolled into the high school in her black sweatshirt and faded jeans. In the halls, she heard people murmuring about a new student. As usual - like she did with everything that wasn't worth her attention -she easily brushed it off. She sighed, trying to ignore all the noise and found Mia's locker.

When Catherine got to Mia's locker, she found her bent over in front of her blue metal locker, shoving old beat-up textbooks and pencils into her pink and white polk-a-dot bag. Catherine raised an eyebrow and heaved a sigh, leaning against the locker next to her sidekick's. She watched the seconds tick by on her expensive Rolex watch. Which, by the way, did NOT match her attire. Of course, Catherine's parents didn't buy the watch for her. Mia's parents did.

Impatient, Catherine started tapping her foot. Mia stopped what she was doing and slowly looked up. She froze with confusion on her face as if she didn't know why Catherine was there. "Homework?" Catherine asked her. She plucked a lollipop from the top shelf of Mia's locker and unwrapped it.

"O-oh! Yeah!" Mia fumbled around in her locker and pulled out another bag. She dumped out all the contents, which appeared to be all of the homework assignments that she did for Catherine. "Here. Um..." She shuffled the papers around, "Here's the assignment on Hatshepsut."

"Thanks." Catherine said half-heartedly. She sucked on her lollipop and twirled it around between her two fingers. "So...who's the new student everyone's talking about?" she asked.

"Hmm?" Mia was still scrambling around in front of her locker in an unorganized manner. "History, Math, English....World Languages," she started mumbling and flipped through papers in her folder.

Catherine furrowed her eyebrows. Seriously? She thought. Girl, if you're like this in high school, I wonder what's it's gonna be like for you in college. Catherine blew air out of her cheeks and lightly kicked Mia's foot. "Oh! Um...the new girl...yeah. Her. Umm...she's Chinese, that I definitely know. I think her name's Cindy Wang or Wong or Huang, whatever it is. Anyways, she immigrated from China, but she's fluent. And she doesn't exactly fall into the elite class like we do. Her parents aren't rich and they aren't poor either...yeah...and I think she's in our class, yeah..." Mia trailed off at the end and started sorting papers again.

Catherine responded a while later. " 'Kay then. Have fun." She eyed Mia's piles and piles of papers. The classes the papers belonged to weren't even labeled on the sheets. Catherine strutted off to Homeroom and waited for Mia. Minutes later right before the bell rang, Mia barged in through the door, scaring a bunch of people.

She found a seat next to Catherine. "The Cindy Girl should be coming in sometime between now and first period."

Catherine nodded and propped her head up with her hand, stifling a yawn. The teacher came in, a young 25-year-old graduate from Harvard University. She was Catherine's favorite. She didn't give a lot of homework. Most of the time, she didn't give any homework. After all, young people are lazy these days, and who wants to grade papers? Especially for 100 students?

"Class," the teacher began. Her hands were clasped together in a pleasant manner and her smile almost blinded Catherine. "Welcome our new student, Cindy Wang."

As if the whole thing was planned ahead of time, the door opened and the new girl shuffled to the front of the room. The teacher motioned at her, "Cindy, introduce yourself."

Looking nervous, Cindy smiled lightly, "Hi." She gave a small wave. "I'm Cindy. Nice to meet you." Her voice was gentle and she held her books against her chest. From what Catherine could see, this girl was very different.

"Cathy." Mia nudged her. "She isn't wearing any makeup! And her shoes...I haven't even heard of that brand before." Clearly, Cindy didn't exactly fit in with the elite class.

Trying to show that she wasn't interested, Catherine straightened and propped her feet up on the desk. "So?" She sucked on her lollipop and tossed it into the garbage can across the room. It landed a couple inches away. "Yo kid!" She yelled to no one in particular. A couple of her classmates looked up. She pointed at a random one. "Pick that up and throw it in the garbage." Not wanting to cause trouble for herself, the student stood up quietly and picked up the lollipop stick, wrinkling her nose in disgust. But, she still threw it out.

Turning her attention back to Cindy, she saw that she was walking down the aisle of desks to the end of the row. She sat down in a prim and proper manner and flipped open her textbook to the page that was written on the board. Then she put her glasses on and took out a notebook, pencil in hand and ready to take notes.

It all looked so...Asian.

Hi guys! Please leave comments!

And I really hope that no one is offended by the fact that the Asian is the victim! It's just that this school is full of Americans and there aren't any Asians. Hope you understand!
