Chapter 1 [Prologue]

 

 

 

Bright lights flashed, music blasted, and the air tinkled with laughter. A party was being held at Alexa's mansion due to that special night. October 31^st. It was the night all the vampires living on the east coast of the United States gathered together to celebrate the beginning of their race. To humans, this day was known as Halloween. 

This year, the annual party was held at Alexa's home. The mansion was secluded by trees and bushes. It was also located in the center of the forest, making it hard for humans to find.  

Alexa tapped her long, painted black nails against her champagne glass. Instead of champagne though, the glass was filled with blood. She scoured the room for Ryan. Finally, she spotted his blonde spiky hair amongst the sea of heads on the dance floor. She sauntered over to him, swaying her hips in the process. She paid no attention to all the stares she received from the male vampires, instead kept her eyes on Ryan. 

"Hey." She greeted.

Ryan turned around and she could see the smeared, red lipstick by the corner of his upper lip. 

She raised her eyebrows questioningly, "Another one?"

Ryan simply shrugged.

Even though they were lovers, the two still messed around with other vampires. After all, it was hard to commit to a 220 year relationship. The relationships that the other had with other vampires didn't bother either of them either.  

Alexa took Ryan by the hand and dragged him off of the dance floor and into another room; the living room.

She settled on the black leather couch and Ryan followed suit. 

"So..." Ryan started. "Why am I here?"

Alexa took in a breath, carefully choosing her words, "Have you wondered what it would be like to be human again?" 

Ryan narrowed his eyes, "So that's what been bothering you these past days?"

Alexa nodded, "All the humans that we kill...they're lower than dirt, but they can still feel, even down to the last minute when we're sucking the life out of them. They have so many things we don't have."

Being a vampire, Alexa couldn't feel things emotionally or physically. The only emotions she felt anger, hatred, bitterness, and love for Ryan. The catch? No matter how much a vampire loved the other, he or she would still feel unsatisfied and not loved enough. 

Naturally, vampires were only left with dark emotions and the senses they needed to kill, such as advanced eyesight, a better sense of smell, and extremely sensitive ears. And all the senses they had were intended to be used to kill, which basically proved that vampires were just good-for-nothing creatures that murdered innocent humans. 

"Alexa," Ryan stared intently at her with his ruby red eyes. "Being human...that's the one thing that all vampires crave. Becoming a vampire is something that none of us want, and I think you know that by now."

Ryan was right. Being a vampire was similar to a zombie. You just walked around lifelessly, and you couldn't feel anything. None of your organs worked either. In addition, vampires didn't need to breathe, making them lifeless as ever. Basically, vampires only needed blood. They craved it. If there was something that vampires could feel, it would be the sunlight. But no vampire ever dared to step out into the sun. The pain was supposed to be unbearable and even when you were being burnt to ashes, you could feel it until you were nothing but a pile of glittery dust.

"You don't know anything that could make me human again?" Alexa asked. Vampires were selfish, too. They only thought for themselves and didn't consider other people's feelings. After all, their feelings were muted by the constant pain and every sadness imaginable that they felt. Although being a vampire may sound cool, they were constantly haunted by sadness, anger, and dark emotions. The only way to ease it was to take it out on someone, usually a human, who resulted as a murder victim.

"Well," Ryan mused, "I do know something that may. But no vampire brave enough has done it for the past century - or should I say stupid enough. You know just as well as I do that every vampire has died trying."

"I don't care." Alexa answered immediately. "So let me die. At least I tried."

Ryan sighed and held out his hand, "Come with me."
